We know some of them well and are now recommended by the doctors themselves: we refer to ginger, turmeric, lemon, and other readily available foods.

Sometimes pinpointing the cause of the inflammation may not be that simple. In fact, beyond having contracted the typical cold viruses (such as Rhinovirus) after coming into contact with people who already had an ongoing flu syndrome, the common sore throat can also be caused by the following situations:

  1. Thermal excursions between the external and internal environment
  2. A too-dry climate with no humidity
  3. Bacteria such as Streptococci
  4. Smoke
  5. Contact with irritating chemicals
  6. Allergies to pollen and mold

Though underestimated, gargling helps disinfect and relieve throat pain. We can gargle several times a day with water and salt, water and apple cider vinegar or water, and three drops of mint essential oil. A glass of warm water and a teaspoon of salt or 1-2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar is sufficient in the first two cases.


It contains vitamins, minerals, and flavonoids and is an effective natural antibiotic. It can be consumed in chewable tablets or taken as a hydroalcoholic extract (about 40 drops diluted in a bit of water twice a day). Propolis will reduce the red throat and prevent plaque formation.


Together with propolis, it is among the most used natural remedies for sore throats in case of oral cavity inflammation. It is recommended to treat colds and flu as a form of prevention since it strengthens the immune system and limits the proliferation of bacteria. We can take it through a decoction prepared with 1 g of roots and 150 g of hot water, or in the form of a liquid extract, with 20-25 drops 4-5 times a day.

Ginger And Lemon

The sour taste of lemon and the spicy ginger can be combined to make sweets, syrups, and beneficial herbal teas. Ginger has powerful anti-inflammatory properties, while lemon is rich in vitamin C and supports the body’s defenses. For the ginger and lemon candies, pour a tablespoon of water, two tablespoons of lemon juice, 50 grams of sugar, and grated ginger root into a pot on the stove. When we have a thick mixture, we will fill you with molds to cool in the freezer. A cup of hot water, a few slices of ginger, and a couple of teaspoons of lemon juice are enough for the herbal tea.


We use them to flavor our dishes, but they are very effective against burning in the throat. Cloves have an antiseptic and analgesic action that soothes pain and irritation. How to use this effective remedy for sore throat? In the form of an infusion, pour two cloves into a saucepan to boil for about ten minutes, or as an essential oil: 2 drops in a glass of warm water. For both remedies, two administrations per day are enough.

Turmeric And Honey

Honey is a well-known natural antibacterial and antibiotic, which, together with the pain-relieving and anti-inflammatory qualities of turmeric, creates a potent mix against flu and sore throat. In a few steps, we can create a mixture by simply combining the honey with turmeric powder (a combination that will be left to rest for one night), or a syrup, heating honey, a teaspoon of turmeric, and lemon juice on the stove for 5 minutes.

Ribes Nigrum

We conclude with another precious anti-inflammatory for the throat: black currant. It effectively fights irritation caused by colds or viruses and that caused by allergies, being, in fact, a powerful antihistamine. To immediately enjoy its benefits, we recommend choosing glycerine macerate: 100 drops two times a day for the first few days and, subsequently, half a dose per day until the symptoms disappear.

Throat Inflammation: What To Eat And What To Avoid

Taking care of nutrition can help us tolerate the oral cavity’s irritation better. Liquids are particularly recommended: we consume hot herbal teas always accompanied by a drop of honey or, on the contrary, in case of solid burning, cool and thirst-quenching drinks. An example can be a glass of water, lemon juice, and mint to concentrate on vitamin C and intense antiseptic action. 

Another suggestion we give is to take ferments or consume fermented foods. What to avoid? With an inflamed throat, it is advisable to temporarily exclude fried dishes rich in preservatives and, in general, dishes that are difficult to digest from the diet. If not tolerated, it is also advisable not to consume irritating spices such as pepper and chili. Finally, it is necessary to refrain from consuming coffee and drinks that contain high amounts of caffeine.
